Database
Operations
| The database
operations check boxes
indicate what functions will
be performed on the databases
located by Access Maintainer.
Two functions are available,
compact the database and
repair the database. At least
one database operation must
be set for the processing to
be performed. |

Repair
Database
Microsoft Access databases can become
corrupt when the database engine
begins writing data to the database
but is abnormally terminated before
completing the write operation. This
may happen when there is a power
failure or hardware failure.
In Microsoft Jet 2.x databases it was
recommended that a repair be used
before compactions. This was to
ensure that truncation errors did not
occur during the compaction. However
this has been fixed with later
versions of the Jet engine and now
the repair operation is only
recommended when an error occurs and
the software alerts you that a repair
should be performed.
By selecting
this option, Access Maintainer will
perform a repair operation on any
version 2 databases it locates.
version 3 or greater databases will
not be repaired before the
compaction.
'Access
Maintainer will attempt to repair any
database irrespective of version if
it is alerted by the jet engine that
the database has an error and should
be repaired.
Do not use the
repair option on replicated databases
as this will stop the database from
being replicable
Compact
Database
Compaction of Microsoft Access
databases eliminates wasted disk
space and defragments the database
leading to better performance.
Access Maintainer utilizes the Jet
Engine compact operation provided by
Microsoft Access. As such it provides
exactly the same compaction service
as the Tools->Compact option
withing Microsoft Access.
- Note:
autonumber fields will be
reset to begin after the
highest number field
currently existing in the
database.
- The
compaction process creates an
entire copy of the existing
database before replacing the
original. Ensure that there
is sufficient space in the
applications drive to store
the copy. This location is
can be set in the Advanced
Options->Compact Path
screen.
